Until the 1920s this square did not exist, the place was just a field area of the former Empreza rubber plantation located at the end of the urban area of Rio Branco. During Hugo Carneiro's government (1926-1930) the area gave way to the construction of the Military Police building and to the Presidio Ministro Vicente Rao (current headquarters of the Rio Branco City Hall) that defined the contours of Praça Rodrigues Alves. Decades later, the square was truly urbanized by Governor Guiomard Santos and began to have its definitive layout. In 1964, in a new reform undertaken by the first governor elected by the Acre people, José Augusto de Araújo, Rodrigues Alves square gained a statue of Col. Plácido do Castro, commander of the Acrean Revolution and that is why it came to be known as Praça Plácido de Castro. Today, after an existence of more than 80 years, the old square has been completely rebuilt and modernized, in a gesture of attention and affection with this very special place and this city.
