An important part of Bahian culture, typical cuisine is part of the elements that explain the essence, history and religious syncretism of Bahia. To celebrate and present this unique cuisine to the world, in August 2006, SENAC inaugurated the Museum of Bahian Gastronomy - MGBA, the first of its kind in Latin America. MGBA is part of the SENAC Pelourinho complex, which still has its structure a theater, an arena, a souvenir shop and a restaurant, all properly "musealized", as curator Raul Lody defines.

The museum is already a show just for its architecture. Upon entering, a circuit begins at the Walls of Santa Catarina, the oldest and most important archaeological landmark in Salvador, which are highlighted with a luminotechnical project and a panel showing iconographic and textual references. Followed by the permanent exhibition, there are large panels signed by renowned photographers that address diverse cultural themes, such as the sacred foods of candoblé. The enlarged photographs compose the human scenarios, bringing together ways of eating, the parties, the baianas de acarajé and other themes that show the diversity of eating on the street, at home, at the party and at religious ceremonies.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the MGBA also has specific installations on acarajé and cassava and rotating display windows, alternating periodically, with homage to personalities who helped build the history of Bahian cuisine.

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm.

Free entrance.
