TAVERN OF MEMORIES
The Queirolo
Men and women, of all ages, come from all over Lima to enjoy the atmosphere of this magical tavern and taste an old wine or a traditional pisco, accompanied by some of the delicious stews that are offered there. After 128 years of existence, the Antigua Taberna El Queirolo is the obligatory meeting point for anyone who loves good living. Let's see why ...
Those were times of war for Peru when the Queirolo went to settle in the old Magdalena Vieja district created in the middle of the 16th century, renamed in 1821 by General Don José de San Martín with the name of Pueblo Libre. It is 1880 when the history of El Queirolo begins with the foundation of what is remembered today as the Antigua Taberna Queirolo.
It was up to Don Santiago Queirolo Raggio, the grandfather of "the Queirolo", as many call this family, founding it. It was the typical grocery store of the time. Those who visited it found there a diversity of groceries, wines, as well as preserves, in short ... El Queirolo thus supplied a clientele from farms in the area such as Maranga, Mateo Salado, San Felipe, Pando, Ayague, among others.
The house with European airs where the tavern was erected had been built only a few years before, in the mid-1870s. This, which is preserved to this day, shows whoever visits interiors that keep intact the cozy charm with which El Queirolo came to the world. Over there one of the first telephones that Peru had, over there a phonograph and an old cash register, in perfect condition. Testimony that the tavern also contributed to our history in its own way.
All against the background of an invaluable collection of photographs that shows us how the business, over time, grew steadily. On the corner, where the grocery store was located, only the tavern would function over the years. Next to it, to the side of Jr. San Martín, a few meters from it, the winery, dedicated to the production and sale of wines and piscos that today also make our country prestigious.
The “Santiago Queirolo” Winery and Tavern operates on 1062 San Martín Avenue and offers us an excellent restaurant and cafeteria service. Rather, it is an environment full of tradition and grace, a corner of the past that shows us images of the Free People that passed, but above all, a favorable place to taste the best wines from the famous Queirolo winery.
QUEIROLO: SERVICE HOURS
Monday to Wednesday: 9:30 a.m. at 11:00 p.m.
Thursday to Saturday: 9:30 a.m. at 12:00 p.m.
Sundays: 10:00 a.m. at 4:00 p.m.
Just over eight decades after the tavern was founded in 1963, the growth of the business would impose further changes. The vineyards of the Santiago Queirolo winery would be moved to lands in the province of Cañete south of Lima. The original headquarters of the winery is today only the administrative and distribution center. Currently, the Queirolo have more than 225 hectares of vineyards in Ica and Cañete, as well as a production plant that has state-of-the-art technology in this field.
They tell us that in its first years of existence, its audience was exclusively male. And that, to find the tavern, people initially moved in carts or buggies that were parked in front of it. The tram that passed through Avenida Brasil would later facilitate the arrival of a larger and more diverse clientele. Today, male exclusivity is a thing of the past. Moreover, leaving behind the idea that it was an exclusive place for the so-called stronger sex, this enclosure, welcoming people of all ages, has also become a family meeting place.
This is not surprising. Since from year to year, over the decades, El Queirolo has improved the quality of both the menu and the service, in addition to the improvements carried out within the premises itself. Time and the tenacious work of this distinguished family turned that small family business into what we now know as the Antigua Taberna Queirolo. A bar with its own personality, imbued with an atmosphere of the early twentieth century, where you can taste delicious snacks, sandwiches and, above all, the wines and piscos of Santiago Queirolo.
Thus, General Vivanco Avenue bears witness to the unique Queirolo Tavern, which since its inception has been the preferred bar for all those who love good gatherings and who can enjoy a restaurant and cafeteria service in an atmosphere full of tradition. "What they most request, from what I have seen," a diner told us, "is the country ham sandwiches that they make at home, the cold meat leg, the stuffed potato, the choritos a la chalaca, the pickled fish and the traditional snacks of ham, cheese and cabanossi, all accompanied by the inevitable wines and piscos that enhance the meal ”.
"In the opinion of our public we are the best tavern in Lima", mentions the administrator of the place, Stella Stolar, who has spent 15 years working in the Antigua Taberna Queirolo, a dream place that, throughout its 128-year long history It has also known how to change, adapting to each era and thus becoming a benchmark of Lima's gastronomy. Although never, as we were told, at the price of sacrificing being the meeting point of all those who wish to find one of the old and traditional Lima bars within its walls.
“I know of several cases of people who are our clients because their grandfather or father brought them as children; they now bring their own children… this is also proof that our clients are of all ages and that they are renewed with the passing of each generation. Although I cannot mention statistical data, what I can say is that the tavern is never empty, it always has an audience… that is, an installed capacity for 100 people who rotate frequently throughout the day, ”says Stella with pride.
