Punta Cana
Punta Cana is part of the municipal district of Punta Cana-Bavaro-Verón-Macao in La Altagracia, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. The region is best known for its beaches and "seaside resorts" on both the Caribbean and Atlantic coast and has been a popular tourist destination since the 1970s. The name "Punta Cana" refers to a species of Cane-like palm trees in the area literally mean "Ponta das Canas".
Tourism
Dominican Republic's capital of international tourism, Punta Cana is a dream place where you can enjoy postcard visuals without worrying about anything. Its 8 kilometers of white sandy beaches, enchanting blue sea and coconut palms are an invitation for activities such as diving, kite surfing, windsurfing and boating and kayaking. All properly programmed by the more than thirty resorts located on the eastern tip of the country, most operating on the all-inclusive system, which guarantees lodging and food. The cuisine is hardly splendor (especially the most popular resorts), but as there is usually more than one restaurant per lodging - with a variety of dishes - it survives well. The impressive Punta Cana complex has a sequence of hotels side by side, with the possibility to circulate among them - a collection of luxuries ranging from swimming pools and spas to golf courses. Lively casinos and nightclubs to the rhythm of meringue, bachata and reggaeton keep the visitors busy at night. With so many attractions, the temptation to stay all the time in the territory of the hotels is great, but it would be a mistake not to also enjoy the trips to nearby islands and beaches, with a chance to even swim with dolphins.
Gastronomy
Dominican dishes have Spanish, African and Creole influences. Among the most typical are the "hangover cure" Sancocho, which mixes rice, coriander, banana, pumpkin, potato, cassava, seven types of meat, chicken and lamb; Mofongo; and lastly, the typical national dish La Bandera Dominicana, which combines white rice, red beans (the habichuelas rojas) and meat.
Be sure to try the nationally brewed Presidente beer and "Mama Juana", a typical drink made with white rum, herbs, roots, cinnamon and honey, an aphrodisiac for men, according to Dominicans.
In Punta Cana the international cuisine predominates. Fusion dishes that mix traditional Dominican spices with haute cuisine.
