Tourist points
Most of Colonia del Sacramento's sights are in the historic district, which houses practically all of the city's museums, as well as restaurants, bars, candy shops and craft shops. This is probably the biggest attraction of the city and it happens for the beauty of the combination of Spanish and Portuguese features present in the architecture.
Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse is a must for anyone visiting the city. From the top of the lighthouse you can see the entire coastline of Colonia de Sacramento and if the day is clear you can see the land of Buenos Aires. The Porta del Campo, a postcard of Colonia del Sacramento, was erected by the Portuguese government in 1745. The Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament is the oldest church in Uruguay. Built in 1680, it has Portuguese and Spanish architectural features.
Sacramento Colony has several small museums, which tell the history of the city, the colonization and the local culture. The Portuguese Museum portrays the era of colonization and life in the colonial era with a wealth of detail.
Calle de los Suspiros, or Calle dos Suspiros is the most visited street in Colonia del Sacramento.
Yates Port is a tranquil spot from which domestic vessels arrive and depart for Buenos Aires, Carmelo and the surrounding area.
Sacramento's famous Colonia sunset draws tourists and locals to the riverside when the afternoon falls.
Currently the city is a World Heritage Site.
Presentation
Colonia del Sacramento is a city in southwestern Uruguay, facing the La Plata River in Buenos Aires. It is the oldest city in Uruguay located 180 km from Montevideo, the capital of the country, and only 50 km from Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina (in this case, crossing the Río de la Plata).
Its historic district has been considered Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 1995 and has a well-preserved colonial architecture, full of narrow streets, illuminated by lanterns (known as 'lighthouses') and houses covered with clay tiles and decorated with traditional Lusitanian tiles. More than 300 years of history.
It was founded by the Portuguese in 1608. For seven times it changed its administration between Portuguese and Spanish and was still part of Brazil. One of the most interesting streets is Portugal Street.
