Buenavista (formerly El Tolrá) is located on a hill in the Central Cordillera. The urban part is made up of 343 inhabited communities spread over the mountain from where you can see the splendid landscape of the Valley of the Maraveles, the Quindiú Valley and much of the north of the Cauca Valley. Hence the names that have distinguished our municipality in the inspiration of poets and writers: “Plaza Buenavista a Cielo”, “Buenavista land of the landscape”, “Buenavista, Mirador del Quindío”, simply Buenavista, because it is a word that lights up all the meaning of its beautiful landscape. As we know, the aborigines of these lands were the Pijaos, Quimbayas and Quindos Indians in the areas surrounding what is now called Buenavista. The first mentioned were known for their warrior spirit (warlike) and the second for their work. Previous testimony is the large number of archaeological pieces found in the excavations carried out until the closing. Over the years they began to collect settlers from the Departments of Antioquia, Tolima and Santanderes, especially Granada Antioquia. This region belongs to the Municipality of Pijao Caldas.
In 1928 they began to pick up several people, led by Mr. José Jesús Jiménez Yépez among others, a place that is now called Casa Museo del Señor Néstor Jaime Cárdenas Jiménez, located on the beautiful main street, where it later ran on the beach , place of passage and rest of the tenants, who had to cross from this land to go from Antioquia to the center of the country and to the Cauca Valley. One of the places where we were forced to go was the top of Tolrá, located in the upper part of the Municipality on the Cerro de Hacienda del Señor Néstor Jaime Cárdenas, the place where in times of violence and colonization by the spaces of Colonel Carlos Tolrá Liberated several battles that were very bloody and slaughter of indigenous people in the region without mercy, an act that distinguished him for his fidelity, in the memory of all the Tolrá surname, as ungrateful, for those who care about history.
Among the first settlers linked to El Tolrá are: Claudio Ramírez, Jesús Castro, Arturo Palacino, Ramón Vélez, Polo Gil, among others. They began to cut down mountains and cultivate their plots. It was then and resuming the text, that in 1928, it was the José de Jesús Jiménez Yépez de Granada (Antioquia) and the crossroads, one that led to Pijao and Tolima, and the other that led to Caicedonia. build a tenement house that aims to be a meeting and resting place for passersby, especially on the outskirts. This house is the food that will eventually become the municipality of Buenavista. In 1933 with the aforementioned and others who were later called as: Célico Londoño, Nepomuceno Gallón, Esmeragdo and Alberto Giraldo, Eliseo Arbeláez, Luís Felipe González and Gerardo Loaiza, they decided to bring the calls, place the first marker, place the first stone. for the chapel and the first school building. According to testimonies, the idea of starting up the house was donated by José de Jesús Jiménez and the others followed him in this work, having as a foundation on May 3, 1933 in the name of the house "El Tolrá", in honor of a Infantry Colonel Carlos Tolrá who appeared to be a servant of the Spanish army and several battles throughout the mountain range of the western region. In 1937, the village of El Tolrá became a Police Inspection of the Municipality of Pijao It is important to note that Luís Felipe González, one of the founders, when building his house and placing it on the front wall and in large letters in the name of BUENAVISTA This name It impacted many other people and since then El Tolrá was taking the name Buenavista among the people, although the official was still El Tolrá.
In 1944 I reached the category of Departmental Corregimiento (Caldas), so it is believed that the Development Board was created and in the same way the Parish of Buenavista was installed with the name of Parish of Our Lord Jesus Christ Crucified. In 1956, being the governor of the old fishing department in Coronel Gustavo Sierra Ochoa, the Tolrá rose to the category of Special Township, and it was then that among the settlers they decided to seek an echo of support to find that the tolerant will be segregated from the Municipality of Caldas straw and became a Municipality, which on the ground had the characteristics of a bell with large buildings and commerce, which generated an expectation of self-sustaining progress for this beautiful scenic landscape of the mountain range. And so it was as a result of the enormous efforts of the inhabitants of the region that through Ordinance December 29, 1966, the first Assembly of Quindío created the Municipality of Buenavista (formerly Corregimiento El Tolrá), emancipated from the Municipality of Pijao and begins its administrative life on March 11, 1967.
In 1969, the Buenavista Institute was founded by Mr. Luís Eduardo Jaramillo Puerta and began working on February 1 of the year with the 1st degree (35 students), the same year it was inaugurated by Volunteers Benemérito Corps de Fuego. of Buenavista. The development of Buenavista grew day by day with each of its local administrators appointed by decree from the Quindío Government, until the year 1988 from which the first popular ranking was chosen by Mr. Néstor Jaime Cárdenas Jiménez among other data . general interest we highlight that:
The first Municipal Administration was made up of the following: Ignacio León Orozco as Mayor, Eugenio Alzate as Treasurer and Aristóbulo Aristizábal as Personero. Since then Buenavista has had 24 mayors, 7 of them by popular election.
