The first version of this Jesuit work was completed in 1746, dedicated to St. Francis Xavier. In the eighteenth century was built almost in its entirety. With the expulsion of the Jesuits, the temple was called Church of Saint Alexander.

Built in the seventeenth century, the Church of Santo Alexandre has been part of a Jesuit convent, and currently houses the Museum of Sacred Art of Pará, has a collection of 320 sacred pieces, of which 253 on display, coming from the collections of the Church itself and the Archbishopric, as well as the collection of Abelardo Santos, composed of 200 pieces acquired to integrate the ensemble.

It is part of the Feliz Lusitânia complex, a collection of historical buildings that form part of the foundation of Belém.

In its ground area, the place also presents the Fidanza Gallery, a café and the Emporium of the Arts boutique. In the first floor are located the rooms and corridors where are deposited two-dimensional and three-dimensional sacred works, while the second floor is intended for the Auditorium, the Library, the Restoration Laboratory and the Technical Reserve. The administration of the space is located in the attic.

It is important to emphasize that the Church of Saint Alexandre did not lose its religious function, on the contrary: it gained breadth of use because nowadays, in its interior, are presented concerts, book launches etc.
