In this area is the headquarters of the Central Bank of the Argentine Republic. It was built between 1872 and 1876 based on the Italian academic style, at first it housed the headquarters of the Mortgage Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires and later the Supreme Court of Justice. The front is decorated with Corinthian columns and a clock framed by sculptures.
There is also the headquarters of the Standart Bank (former Bank Boston), inaugurated on November 3, 1924. Its style is an adaptation of the Spanish Renaissance and Plateresque, with a series of North American functional details.
This headquarters replaced the one they had at the intersection of Batolomé Miter and San Martín streets, which was the first branch that the bank opened outside the United States. As a curiosity, Mariano Moreno, secretary of the First Board, lived on this site from 1805 to 1811.
You can also see the headquarters of several banks with great architectural value, such as the Banco Río de la Plata, the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires, the French Bank and the Banco Hipotecario Nacional. The headquarters of the Río de la Plata Bank was inaugurated in 1927 and was the work of the architect Alejandro Bustillo. The headquarters of the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires was inaugurated in 1940, and the Assembly of the Year XIII was held in that same property.
The architecture of the headquarters of the Banco Hipotecario Nacional, inaugurated in 1966, was described as ´´brutalista´´, and was designed by the architect Clorindo Testa. Finally, the headquarters of the French Bank was inaugurated in 1926 and has traits of European academicism, highlighting the dome located on the ochava.
Some of the city's museums are located in this area, among which the Miter Museum stands out. This museum is installed in the house of former President Bartolomé Miter and opened its doors in 1907.
The museum is based on the life of the Argentine politician, being able to observe manuscripts, articles used by Miter, the original furniture and the American Library composed of tens of thousands of works. The Numismatic Museum of the Central Bank has a sample that exceeds 15 thousand pieces.
The building was built in 1862 and housed the Stock Exchange and the Central Bank. Finally, the Police Museum has been in the area since 1967, when it moved to its current headquarters. It was inaugurated in 1899, being the second of its kind in the world, and brings together historical, technical and criminalistic elements.
The Buenos Aires City or the Banking Zone is the area of the city center where the largest number of banking and financial entities are concentrated. It is located north of what was formerly the Catedral neighborhood.
Here you can visit both sites of great architectural value and one of the many museums located in the area.
