Malá Strana (the "small side" in Czech) is the second independent city of Prague after the Old Town. For a long time the residential district of the aristocracy, this area of the city knew how to preserve its magnificent palaces surrounded by gardens in a beautiful location between the river, Petřín park and castle hill.
The foundation of the independent city in 1258 erased all previous vestiges dating back to the tenth century. The Gothic city was built around a large market square and the church of St. Nicholas, patron saint of merchants. This church rebuilt in the Baroque era still forms the center of the neighborhood.
The location of the (below the castle) marked its natural function as residential neighborhood of the nobility: a function that was reinforced after the great fire of 1571 and that destroyed much of the medieval buildings that with time left room for the construction of beautiful aristocratic residences with private gardens that we currently find in Malá Strana. The slopes of the Petřín hills and the Castle were also progressively conditioned in terraced gardens during the Baroque period (during summer they are open to the public: the Vrtba garden and the terrace gardens situated in the lower part of the castle).
The residential character allowed to preserve the green spaces of the city, as well as the low density of the neighborhood that alternates aristocratic residences, bourgeois houses, gardens and small squares.
