National hystoric monument
Inauguration: 1898
Architects: Engineers Gainza and Agote
Highlight: La Prensa newspaper had a pipeline system through which correspondence was sent from one office to another. It was a pneumatic mail system. In the cultural store on the first floor you can see the post office, the place where correspondence was received and redistributed.
The newspaper La Prensa was founded in 1869 by José C. Paz. Around 1900, it was already considered one of the most important in the world due to technical quality, informative level and circulation. La Prensa was the spokesperson for the conservative sectors and a diffuser of economic liberalism. During the first government of Juan Domingo Perón (1946-1952) the newspaper was confiscated and the company was liquidated. The building was bought half by the General Confederation of Labor and the Union of Newspaper Sellers. In 1956 - after the coup that ended the Perón government in September 1955 - the building was reintegrated into the Paz family and it returned to its activity until 1992. In 1993, it was acquired by one of the most powerful economic groups in Argentina. . That same year, the City Government rented the building. Since then, the House of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires operates in the former headquarters of the newspaper.
The final project was completed in Buenos Aires by the engineers Gainza and Agote, based on the facade design developed in France. The building has eight levels - two basements and six floors - that are structured around a central courtyard.
On each level, all the rooms open onto an internal balcony that circles the central courtyard. The venues are very varied according to their function: headquarters of the printing systems, organization of the distribution of newspapers, customer service and marketing, offices and reception rooms, conference rooms, departments for distinguished guests, technical and administrative offices, services , warehouses and archives, showrooms, communications station, recreation rooms for staff.
In the building there was also a library with more than 80,000 volumes - which even opened a headquarters in Paris -, medical and dental offices, a law firm, a music school and departments for distinguished students, where Giácomo Puccini and Georges Clemenceau stayed. The latter described the place in his "Travel Notes for South America", published in 1911, as "the most sumptuous building in Buenos Aires."
Avenida de Mayo 575.
In 1955 the building was declared a National Historic Monument due to its historical and architectural value.
The building was designed by José C. Paz, founder of the newspaper La Prensa. The construction was carried out between 1895 and 1898. The result was impressive: neither Le Figaro in Paris nor the New York Herald had buildings of such size at that time.
