The basic function of the Institute of Fisheries Museum is to develop scientific and cultural actions, leading the community to become aware of the importance of the preservation and rational use of the aquatic environment.

The Museum of the Fisheries Institute has scientific and cultural purposes and aims to disseminate knowledge originated from the study of the aquatic environment and the technology applied in the rational exploitation of marine and continental waters. It is also its function to develop non-formal educational activities in order to create or discover and stimulate mindsets directed to the correct use of natural resources, including fishery resources.

The Museum also has another important role in relating to the City of Santos since the beginning of the developmental period, since the building, built on the site of an 18th century fortification (Forte Augusto), initially housed the School of Apprentices - Sailors, then a fishing school and finally one of the first research institutes in Baixada Santista. And it is very relevant to keep these references to the past alive, always showing to the community the importance of the Museum building as a historical and cultural heritage since its origin.

The grand building that houses the Museum has an eclectic style, characteristic of the time it was built (1908), as it reflects the influence of different classical architectural styles. Despite its historical importance, it was not until September 1986 that a process was started for the property to be listed by CONDEPHAAT (Council for the Defense of the Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Heritage) of the State of São Paulo. This process was completed in 1998, almost thirteen years later, with the official listing of the property, through Resolution SC-40, of April 2, 1998, published in the Official Gazette of April 7, 1998. All the landscaping that frames the building, as well as the frontal closing wall throughout the area, are excluded, being excluded the other constructions of the Institute of Fisheries, located on the same ground.
