1500 years before our era there was already life and settlements in this area, during the Bronze Age until today what is now Almuñecar was already populated. Later the Phoenicians, the Romans, the Arabs and the Christians have written their history in this land to this day.
The first civilizations date back to the 15th century BC. C, the Bronze Age, later, around the 10th century BC, the colonization of this area by the Phoenicians took place, the first who began to structure the population centers as cities, something that settled a few centuries later, specifically in III BC with the Romans and their concept of city, Almuñecar was an important Roman city in which economic activity revolved around the garum, the bluefin tuna that was fished in the Mediterranean and kept in salting factories. At this time Roman temples and theaters are also built.
Already in our era, in the 8th century the Arabs arrived in the peninsula, Abderraman I arrived in 755 and Almuñecar became part of the Cora de Elvira. It was a walled city to defend itself from invasions by sea, and at the same time a city devoted to agriculture and fishing.
Almuñecar, during the time of Al-Andalus belonged to the Taifa Kingdom of Granada, and became a reference of the kingdom, a coastal reference, in fact in the Nasrid kingdom it was even a royal residence.
Almuñecar was also the historical place where the capitulation of the Arabs was signed in 1489, three years before the final surrender.
Throughout all these years until our era, Almuñecar has been called Sexi, as the Phoenicians called it; Hins-Al.Monacar, as the Muslims called it, and finally, Almuñecar, its current name.

The fiestas on the Costa Tropical, the coast of Granada, as well as in the rest of Andalusia, are taken very seriously by its inhabitants. We highlight national holidays, which are, for example, the kings in January, carnival -which is lived in a special way in Granada- or Holy Week, very important in this city.
To the national festivals, such as Christmas, kings or carnivals in Granada, we must add the festivals that are more local or regional in nature. The most important is Easter which in Granada, as in the rest of Andalusia, is lived with great fervor, with great passion, both on the Costa Tropical and in the inland municipalities. The most prominent are those of Guájar-Faragüit, whose processions leave from the Church of San Lorenzo.
The most important festivals on the Granada Coast arrive in summer, as a good sea coast, July 16 is a date marked in red on the calendar, it is the Virgen del Carmen and the seafaring tradition of this coast makes the municipalities decked out To honor the Virgin of the fishermen, Almuñecar, La Caleta de Salobreña, Carchuna, Torrenueva, Castell de Ferro or La Rábita are the most prominent municipalities.
As for the patron saint festivities, in Salobreña these are between June 24 and 29, as well as in August in this same city the flamenco contest is held in the Arab castle. Almuñecar has its patron saint festivities around August 15, the day of the Virgen de las Antiguas, its patron saint, with festivities aboard the fishing boats, which launch fireworks into the sky filling the night with color. In Motril, also in August, the Virgen de la Cabeza festivities are celebrated.
